Characters | Challengers of the Unknown [Ace Morgan; Rocky Davis; Prof Haley; Red Ryan]; Granny Stopes; The Legion of the Weird [Mistress Vera Wycker; Count Karnak; Madoga; Hordred; Kaftu] |
Synopsis | Ace has a date with a doll - and her voodoo doll made from his uniform scrap and a lock of hair. When she drives a needle through the doll's brain, Ace collapses! The Legion of Weird are Count Karnak, a warlock; Kaftu, master of Egypt's black arts; Hordred, a druid; Madoga, an Indian shaman, and the last witch of Salem, Mistress Wycker, who's killing Ace as an initiation. Yet he won't die, lying in a coma. The curse sounds familiar. Rocky calls his Granny Snopes, an Appalachian wise woman. Via TV, she shows Rocky how to make a "geechy bag", but "the victim must flang it in the witch's face." Rocky carries comatose Ace from the hospital. The bag and a dowsing rod act as a "witch's compass" to point the way. The Legion throws magicks in the Challs' path. A stone statue topples. The giant "Black Hawk of the Nile" is vanquished by garlic-dipped bullets. A snowstorm inside the hospital slows them, and the elevator almost cuts Red in half. Finally Rocky spots the witch. He holds Ace's hand to throw the bag in her face. She screams and melts! Ace wakes, but burned in the wall is the warning, "WE SHALL MEET AGAIN". |

Characters | Challengers of the Unknown [Ace Morgan; Rocky Davis; Prof Haley; Red Ryan/Seekeenakee]; Tiana; Herbert Pike; Multi-Man; Kra |
Synopsis | Continued from last issue... is Red's back story. After Red was blown up (and supposedly killed in COTU 55), he had amnesia. Recalling only Challenger Island, he met Multi-Man, made Liquid Light formula at his behest, but drank it himself! Deluded and super-paranoid, Red turned into a man-fish and swam. He half-killed some pirates, then collapsed. He woke in chains. A beach bum, Pike, exhibited him as "The Lord of the Ocean". Red befriended a Polynesian girl, Tiana, who fed him. When police approached, Red turned into a gorilla, then a golden bird. He flew to another island. Pike persuaded him to become Seekeenakee, a tiki legend, and fetched Tiana. She objected, Pike slapped her down, and Red transformed into the "living god" for revenge. Yet Tiana regretted betraying the gods, and poised on a cliff to jump. Red's awesome weight crumbled the cliff - and Tiana was gone. Red started a war as Seekeenakee (COTU 59). He has many regrets, but most of all losing Tiana. |
