| Characters | Challengers of the Unknown (Ace Morgan; Rocky Davis; Prof Haley; Red Ryan); a doctor; a mental patient; Dread. |
| Synopsis | At a mental hospital, a man shrieks about the Challengers, Cobra Canyon, and the Devil's Circus. The Challs fly to the remote canyon, wary of quicksand. A searing light and will-sapping ray drop the Challs. They're prisoners of Dread, a gigantic Frankenstein-insectoid alien. He's amused by Earthlings, mere 'crawling ants' and drops them into his 'Devil's Circus', a giant ant farm. Rocky brawls with a giant beetle. Red, with his one eye taped shut, fights an insect with a sword. Prof and Ace must battle each other as Ace morphs into a beetle-man. Prof has memorized the labyrinth and rushes out. As Ace follows, fresh air returns him to normal. As all escape, Dread pursues. The Challs lead him into quicksand, then form a human chain to swing free. Dread sinks out of sight. Ace notes, 'Ants sometimes band together to help each other!' |

| Notes | Second half of origin of the Challengers. Includes a synopsis of last issue's half-story. DC Archives credits Dave Wood as writer, but Jack Kirby historians (including Joe Simon) contend Jack brought the comic complete to DC. Did Wood rewrite Kirby's script? |
