Synopsis The Olympian goddesses create the race of Amazons from the souls of women killed before their time by men in order to teach humanity the ways of the primal Earth-goddess Gaea. After the Amazons forget their purpose, they fall prey to the machinations of Ares, who inspires Heracles to conquer the Amazons. In chains, Queen Hippolyte is visited by Athena who encourages her to mount a rebellion against Heracles and his men. Having won their freedom, the Amazons split into two factions, one led by Hippolyte, who rededicate themselves to their original purpose, another led by Hippolyte's sister Antiope, who reject that task. With the help of Poseidon, the goddesses bring Hippolyte's group of Amazons to an island where they are given a new purpose as jailers of an unspeakable evil that lies beneath the island. Time passes, and Hippolyte feels a yearning she cannot identify. The oracle Menalippe informs the queen that of all the souls used to create the Amazons, only hers was pregnant at the time of her death and that she yearns for the child she never had. The goddesses instruct Hippolyte to create a child from the clay on the shore of the island, which they animate with the soul of the unborn infant, whom the queen names Diana. After Diana has grown to maturity, the goddesses ask the Amazons to choose a champion to confront a new scheme of Ares'. Diana wins the tournament the Amazons mount to determine who that should be, and dressed in the garb of the mysterious warrior after whom she was named, the princess prepares to head into Patriarch's World to put a stop to Ares' plot.
