Notes In the early days of this title, the comics only featured a single story (with the usual Li'l Jinx gag in there). Throughout the story in this issue, Mr. Lodge is referred to as Albert Lodge. Although Mr. Lodge is now officially named Hiram, he has also been known as J.P. Lodge and Burton Lodge. It is not known if this was an editorial oversight or if he was actually called Albert at the time.

6 page Life with Archie story "The Riverdale Hillbillies (Part 1)"

Characters Albert [Hiram] Lodge; Veronica Lodge; Clem Lodge [Cousin Clem]; Cooley Lodge [Grandpaw Cooley]; Lily Lodge; Lulu Lodge; Mildew Lodge; un-named Lodge butler; un-named news anchor (bearing a very strong resemblance to Walter Cronkite)
Synopsis The story opens with a single page "teaser" showing Mr. Lodge and Veronica dressed like bums on the street corner selling pencils. The text in a large arrow at the bottom of the page (pointing to the next page of course) draws the readers in saying that such a thing almost happened not too long ago. On the next page, we learn that the Lodge Corporation is in financial trouble. Following a series of bad breaks, the company now finds themselves having to raise $400,000 that week. Mr. Lodge, unable to get help from others, has resorted to calling in his second cousin Clem from the Ozark Mountains, part of the branch of the family that headed south in pioneer days. Clem is said to be the richest man in sassafrass county. Mr. Lodge envisions Clem arriving in a 32-cylinder car, and has gone all out to make Clem feel at home - fixing up the west suite (which is only used by VIPs), and even ordering champaigne, oysters, sweet breads and truffles (interesting side-note: Veronica says she doesn't even know what truffles are!). Soon they hear a car horn, and go out to see Clem and family arriving in a large jalopy - not quite what they expected. We are then introduced to the family - Clem, Grandpa Cooley, Mildew [Clem's son] and Lily and Lucy [Clem's twin daughters]...

8 page Life with Archie story "The Riverdale Hillbillies (Part 2)"

Characters Archie Andrews; Betty Cooper; Jughead Jones; Albert [Hiram] Lodge; Clem Lodge [Cousin Clem]; Cooley Lodge [Grandpaw Cooley]; Lily Lodge; Lulu Lodge; Reggie Mantle; Mr. Watkins [Lodge Enterprises executive]; un-named Lodge butler
Synopsis Picking up where we left off, Cousin Clem introduces his "little boy", Mildew, who is quite handsome. Naturally, Veronica is instantly in love with him. Mr. Lodge shows his relatives to their room. Clem thinks the house is a hotel and asks Mr. Lodge which room is his. Mr. Lodge says that the entire house is his. The characters' behaviors continue to show that they're not used to fancy living (Mildew points out that the house is "bigger than Widder Hawkins' pigpen"). As Veronica is in her dad's office talking to him, they hear Grandpa Cooley yelling for help, and head to the laundry room, where we see Grandpa Cooley in the washing machine (apparently thinking it was where you washed yourself) and complaining about it. They then hear Mildew screaming, and he urgently gets Veronica to rush to the back yard with him, saying that they've got a horrible monster in their drinking well. Once around back, he points to an inflatable toy floating in the pool that looks like a sea monster. Meanwhile, Lily and Lulu are exploring the "barn" (garage). Lulu comments that it isn't much of a barn and wants to know where the cows are. Then then find the riding mower and proceed to wreck Mr. Lodge's flowerbed. Mr. Lodge then gets a phone call from Watkins at the office, who says that the tax people were there and that they had made a mistake. The company no longer owes $400,000 - they now owe $500,000 and they need to have it by Tuesday. Mr. Lodge, exasperated, wonders if he's too old to run away and join the circus. Just then, Clem walks in and Mr. Lodge confirms that Clem's family is indeed the richest family in Sassafrass County. Clem gladly agrees to lend Mr. Lodge as much money as he needs to save his business. Looking at his bank book, Clem states that he currently has $18.32 in the bank. We then learn a bit more - the reason they're the richest family in the county is because they're also the ONLY family in the county (except for Widow Jones, who only has $7 and two old Dewey buttons). The next day, the gang is at the Choklit Shoppe, discussing the situation. As they're leaving, Betty mentions that Dilton had told her about Mr. Lodge's relatives arriving into town. Just then, Veronica walks up, obviously depressed at the situation. When Archie mentions her rich relatives, she bursts out laughing. Betty tells her to cheer up. Just then, Jughead runs up saying he has the solution - if Mr. Lodge loses all his money, Pop Tate will give him a job as a soda jerk. Veronica doesn't find this amusing and yells at Jughead about it - how are they supposed to keep up a mansion and three cars on that salary? Jughead jokingly suggests that maybe they could give up chewing gum, and Veronica storms off saying "With him for a pal, who needs enemies?". Archie tells her to cheer up, and says that one day she'll have money to burn.

4 page Life with Archie story "The Riverdale Hillbillies (Part 3)"

Characters Archie Andrews; Albert [Hiram] Lodge; Clem Lodge [Cousin Clem]; Cooley Lodge [Grandpaw Cooley]; Lily Lodge; Lulu Lodge; un-named Lodge butler
Synopsis Picking up where Part 2 left off, Archie and Veronica are returning to the Lodge mansion. Archie points out that there's a lot of smoke coming from a nearby house. Veronica says that's her house and they run to see what's going on. As they get closer, they notice the smoke is coming from the kitchen, and go to see what's going on. Inside, they find Grandpa Cooley trying to fry eggs in a pan on top of a popup toaster, complaining that it's the tiniest, silliest littlest kitchen stove he's seen. He then runs outside with the eggs, where Mr. Lodge and the rest of his relatives are seated around a picnic table. Mr. Lodge is still worried about the financial situation, and says he isn't hungry when Clem tells him "You ain't eatin' yore vittles" (Mr. Lodge starts to say "I ain't" hungry, but corrects himself). The butler says that he has a phone call, and Mr. Lodge goes to answer it. It's Watkins again, telling Mr. Lodge that the creditors will be there at 10am the next day. Clem says he wishes he had some "cash dollars" so he could help his cousin. Mildew then tells his dad that it's too bad they bought that gold mine - they had LOTS of money before that. Hearing this, Mr. Lodge and Veronica excitedly dance around the room, until Mildew says that it's too bad nobody ever found gold in the mine. He says that the person who sold them the mine really took them for suckers. Clem then points out that of course the person who sold them the mine couldn't have known about the uranium, which again perks up Mr. Lodge. Mr. Lodge asks Clem if he can use the mine as security for a bank loan, and of course Clem agrees. Mr. Lodge says that he'll need all of Clem's papers (meaning the ownership and certification papers), and Mildew goes to fetch them - returning with the newspapers. After Mr. Lodge clarifies which papers he needs, Clem says that he keeps those under his mattress - back in the Ozark Mountains.

5 page Life with Archie story "The Riverdale Hillbillies (Part 4)"

Characters Archie Andrews; Betty Cooper; Jughead Jones; Albert [Hiram] Lodge; Clem Lodge [Cousin Clem]; Mildew Lodge; Mr. Watkins [Lodge Enterprises executive]; un-named news anchor (bearing a strong resemblance to Walter Cronkite); un-named loan officer
Synopsis After 5 pages (a Li'l Jinx strip, an ad, the Archie Club News and another ad), we finally return to our story, picking up where we left off. Mr. Lodge tells everyone to get going and that he'll charter a plane. Clem tells Grampaw Cooley to stay behind with the girls, and takes Mildew with him. Veronica drags Archie along saying maybe he can be helpful. On the plane, Mildew asks his father why the plane doesn't have any propellors. Clem, shushing his son, says that "Second Cousin Albert" (Mr. Lodge) is short on funds and had to hire a cheap model (apparently Clem and Mildew have never seen a jet plane before). Landing at the Sassafrass County airport, the crew quickly boards a waiting helicopter. In the last panel on the story's 20th page, we see the helicopter taking off. From inside the helicopter, Veronica says "Isn't this the wildest?" to Archie. Archie says it is, pointing out that the artist even had to turn the page around to draw it (this panel is drawn vertically instead of horizontally). After a short time, they land on Clem's farm, and he runs inside to get the bill and deed of sale for his mine. He gives them to Mr. Lodge, and Mr. Lodge tells everyone to get back on the helicopter as they have exactly 8 hours to get back to Riverdale. At 8 A.M. the next morning, they are approaching Riverdale on the jet as Veronica admires the sunrise. Once in Riverdale, Mr. Lodge and the gang hail a cab and head for the bank. A news anchor reorts that Lodge Enterprises is trying to raise the money and wonders if they will succeed. Mr. Lodge gets the loan, and they all run across the street to Mr. Lodge's office. At 10 AM, a fellow Lodge Enterprises employee says that a man from the C.L. Corporation will be there soon and that this is the company they owe the most money to. Hearing this, Clem says that he thinks the C.L. Corporation is one of his - "CL" standing for "Clem Lodge". Mildew says that his dad owns LOTS of corporations. When Mr. Lodge says that all his work and trouble was un-necessary, Clem says he's right. Clem then says that he guesses the joke is on Mr. Lodge, at which point Mr. Lodge faints. Mildew asks his dad what happened, and Clem says he doesn't know - that side of the Lodge clan always was a little on the weak side.
