story "The Old Witch"

Synopsis Helen Bennet brings an old woman named Mathilda home and gives her a place to stay. Her husband George is irritated that Helen is always bringing home stray kids or homeless people. He discovers that Mathilda is actually a witch who is attempting an elaborate spell that will enable her to switch bodies with the younger, healthier Helen Bennet. George carves a stake from an ash tree and drives it into Mathilda's heart. He then buries the body in the yard and tells his wife what he has done. Helen is furious at him and calls the police. The police arrive and question him at length. George shows them where he buried the body and tries to explain why it was necessary for him to kill the old woman. When the police disinter the remains, they find that it is actually Helen Bennet's body in the shallow grave and not Mathilda.
