Painted cover by Allen Anderson. Stories and art by Dan De Carlo, Henry Sharp, Bernard Sachs and Irv Novick. Sometimes listed as GI Joe #5. Neither a tie-in with the later toy line/cartoon nor a grim war comic, this first-gen GI Joe focused on lighthearted tales of military life. The Yardbirds, featuring Pvts. Windy and Whitey, was straight-up comedy of the Beetle Bailey/Sad Sack variety. Joe and Mulvaney agree to meet wrestler Mayhem McGee, only to learn that Mayhem is actually Maisie McGee. Sgt. Gruff learns that Pvts. Windy and Whitey are making a mockery of target practice with their bull's-eye marker. Joe and Mulvaney adopt a Korean kid called Peanuts the Mighty who becomes a valuable ally. Temple of Terror; Weepy and Meatball; Mayhem McGee; The Old-Timer; The General's Dinner; The Yardbirds: On Target; Peanuts the Great! Series is renumbered, starting with the following issue, as GI Joe (1951 Ziff Davis) #6. 48 pages, Full Color. Cover price $0.10.
