    Volume 2 - 1st printing. "1983-1986!"

Story and art by Lynn Johnston.

Since their debut in 1979, the world has watched the Pattersons grow up in real time-and to many readers, they feel like family. The cast expands, and roles that will play a big part down the road are just starting to bud. New adventures await Elizabeth as she enters kindergarten and has to spend some time in the hospital. Michael has to deal with a bully at school and takes a flight to Vancouver-all by himself! John has an unfortunate accident and is arrested for breaking and entering! And Elly finds a worthwhile cause in heading up a campaign to save the historic city hall that has been scheduled for demolition. Lynn Johnston's signature style becomes more defined and her storylines more complex as we carry on through the '80s. Volume Two collects the complete daily and Sunday comics from January 1983 through July 14, 1986, with all Sunday comics printed in color.

    Hardcover, 11-in. x 9-in., 544 pages, PC/PB&W.

    NOTE:

"Johnston's art is impeccable. Her simple and graceful line work conveys a great deal of emotion. It's not overly stylized or intricate, making it easy to plug yourself into the roles of the protagonists. Again with the timeless and universal nature of the strip." - Cinema Sentries

"Fans of the highest virtuosity in cartooning will relish this deluxe introduction to the Patterson's heartfelt and delightful story." - Library Journal

    Cover price $39.99.

    Volume 3 - 1st printing. "1986-1989!"

Story and art by Lynn Johnston.

No phone, no light, no motor car, not a single luxury-John and Phil's canoe trip turns them into castaways on an island! Once back in civilization, John solves his mid-life crisis by buying a sportscar, and Elly improbably winds up in front of a judge as a result! Michael enters junior high school, but not before learning a different sort of life lesson at summer camp with a girl named Martha, while Liz loses her first tooth, gets her ears pierced, and finds herself in a "Mean Girls" situation with her friends at school. Then it's wedding bells for Uncle Phil, and Lawrence moves back to town-with a new family of his own! Volume Three, which collects the complete daily and Sunday comics from July 6, 1986 through December 9, 1989, brings to a close the first decade of Lynn Johnston's modern masterwork, but of course, the story is just getting started...

The beloved newspaper comic strip that chronicled the saga of the Patterson family in real time, over three decades, continues in this, the definitive edition.

    Hardcover, 11-in. x 9-in., 544 pages, PC/PB&W.

    Volume 4 - 1st printing. "1990-1993!"

Story and art by Lynn Johnston.

This volume includes the story that earned Lynn Johnston a Pulitzer Prize nomination. The '90s start with a bang for the Pattersons when Elly finds out she is pregnant! Follow April Patterson as she grows from a toddler to a three-year-old, all in this single volume-but that isn't all the excitement in the house, especially when there is a teenager around. Michael gets his first summer job, a steady girlfriend, and a driver's license-if he passes the test. Adolescence is just as challenging for Elizabeth, who navigates middle school, learns to cope with the stigma of wearing glasses, and is peer-pressured into smoking a cigarette! Meanwhile, John succumbs to his (first) mid-life crisis when he buys his first model train.

The highlight of this collection, however, is Lawrence's coming out story, a tender and compassionate tale of gender identity and acceptance for which Lynn was deservedly nominated for the newspaper industry's top honor. Includes every comic strip from December 10, 1989 to April 24, 1993.

    Hardcover, 11-in. x 9-in., 544 pages, PC/PB&W.

    Cover price $49.99.

This item is not in stock at MyComicShop. If you use the "Add to want list" tab to add this issue to your want list, we will email you when it becomes available.

Forty Years With Mr. Oswald, published in 1968, and written and illustrated by Russell "Russ" Johnson, chronicles wonderfully via a comic strip format one man's lifetime in the hardware business. Russ Johnson started drawing strips about daily life and trials of a hardware store owner around 1927 when he went to work in his fathers hardware store. Soon, the Hardware Retailer, a magazine geared towards hardware store owners and suppliers, found out about these strips and asked Johnson to begin submitting strips for each months issue. Johnson continued drawing Mister Oswald for the next 65 years. Johnson adds a nice anecdotal summary before each chapter. The attention to detail is impressive given how busy Johnson was as he was almost always working. The first few pages of the book look almost nothing like the rest because Johnsons style and sophistication as a comic artist and story teller grew at a very rapid rate. Johnsons characters are filled with life through masterful story telling, realistic settings, brilliant situations, and hilarious dialog. The writer who contributed to this review concludes, "Each page has me wishing I worked with these people and I cant stop wondering what it might have been like to know and work with the real Mr. Oswald." Black and white art, 286 pages, hardback.

Kirkman and Scott don't just have their fingers on the pulse of the modern middle-class family; they have a grip on its wrist like a mother pulling a three-year-old past a grocery store cookie aisle. Tadpoles in the toilet, backseat border wars, emergency homemade diapers . . . welcome to another year in the life of the never-a-dull-moment McPherson family. While sister Zoe and brother Hammie's budding sibling rivalry reaches new heights (and volumes), baby Wren is making great strides of her own. With the advent of "the climbing phase" no coffee table, countertop, or bookshelf is too high. For years, the team of Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott have given readers a too-funny-to-be-true, too-real-not-to-be insider's view of the American dream. They get the details and dilemmas so right, in fact, that it's a wonder they haven't been indicted for domestic surveillance. Softcover (Horizontal Format), 11-in. x 9-in., 240 pages, full color. Volume 1 - 1st printing. "Wally's Gang Early Years (1928-1949) and The Bowser Boys (1946-1950)!" Story and art by Frank Johnson. Edited by Chris Byrne and Keith Mayerson. Foreword by Chris Byrne. Introduction by Keith Mayerson. An astonishing historical and artistic discovery: a 2300 page proto-graphic novel begun by a "weekend cartoonist" in 1928 and continuing over the next 50 years! When Frank Johnson, an itinerant musician and shipping clerk, died in 1979, he left behind a startling discovery: more than 2,300 notebook pages of comics and 131 unbound drawings, among them a massive, continuous story line beginning in the earliest surviving notebook dated 1928 - before the existence of comic books! - and following the exploits of his own cast of characters across 50 years until Johnson passed away. During this lifelong project, Johnson invented in private many of the conventions and tropes that define comics storytelling, effectively enacting an alternative secret history of the comics medium. This debut publication of Johnson's work is the first of two 600+ page volumes that will collect the best 1200 pages of his comics, including Wally's Gang, his 50-year magnum opus chronicling the humorous, cliff-hanging adventures of a group of bachelor friends; The Bowser Boys, a seamy, darkly slapstick depiction of bohemian street life that could be considered the first underground comic series; and, coming in Volume 2, Juke Boys, absurd, self-reflexive graphic experimentation. Curator and historian Chris Byrne and fine artist and graphic novelist Keith Mayerson have brought this astounding work into the light of day and provide historical background and analysis. Softcover, 634 pages, full color. Cover price $49.99.

This item is not in stock at MyComicShop. If you use the "Add to want list" tab to add this issue to your want list, we will email you when it becomes available.

1st printing. Frank Frazetta! He's been rightfully called "The Grand Master of Fantasy Art"! But, it's little known that Frazetta also conquered other worlds in the Golden Age of Comics, as shown in his Donald Duck-ish funny animal and hilarious hillbilly comic book stories. Even those aware of this wonderful Frazetta art don't know the extent--this book is a whopping 256 page, large-format pages! Did we mention ferocious, terrifying wolves and swampland creatures in the plethora of animal stories illustrations as only Frazetta could draw them? There's also lions and tigers and bears--oh my!--before Frazetta's famous paintings captured the same subjects. But wait, there's more! (As they say.) You'll see the roots of the Frazetta Girl in the sexy Kathy teenage girl adventures. And there's the hot Daisy Mae-look-alike, Clarabelle, in the hillbilly hi-jinks stories of her beau, Looey Lazybones (Holy Li'l Abner!). The introduction is by the famed cartoon director Ralph Bakshi who well knew Frazetta and closely worked with him when they co-produced the animated feature film, "Fire and Ice." The strip ran from 1970-1974.

Includes an interview with Robert Tonner, world-renowned doll artist.

From Krakow to Krypton: Jews and Comic Books TPB (2008) 1-1ST

1st printing. By Arie Kaplan. Jews created the first comic book, the first graphic novel, the first comic book convention, the first comic book specialty store, and they helped create the underground comics (or Comix) movement of the late 60s and early 70s. Many of the creators of the most famous comic books, such as Superman, Spiderman, X-Men, and Batman, as well as the founders of MAD magazine, were Jewish. From Krakow to Krypton: Jews and Comic Books tells their stories and demonstrates how they brought a uniquely Jewish perspective to their work and to the comics industry as a whole. Over-sized and in full color, From Krakow to Krypton is filled with sidebars, cartoon bubbles, comic book graphics, original design sketches, and photographs. It is a visually stunning and exhilarating history. 8-in x 11-in., 240 pages, PC/PBW. Cover price $25.00.
