Volume 29 - 1st printing. "The British Army on the Western Front 1916!" By Bruce Gudmundsson. Bruce Gudmundsson guides us expertly through the history of the British Expeditionary Force in 1916 as it struggled to become a modern army and turn the tide of the First World War. Examining the tactical innovatio0ns that accompanied this change and the conflicting strategies and tactics that it was expected to pursue, Gudmundsson explores the difficulties facing the British Army, including the bewildering number of new technologies in use, from novelties such as combat aircraft, tanks and armoured cars to trench mortars and more than a thousand pieces of siege artillery. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $25.95.

Volume 147 - 1st printing. "Crete 1941!" Written by Peter Antill. Art by Howard Gerrard. Operation Mercury, the German airborne assault on the island of Crete in May 1941, was the first strategic use of airborne forces in history. The assault began on 20 May, with landings near the island's key airports, and reinforcements the next day allowed the German forces to capture one end of the runway at Maleme. By 24 May, the Germans were being reinforced by air on a huge scale and on 1 June Crete surrendered. This book describes how desperately close the battle had been and explains how German losses so shocked the Führer that he never again authorised a major airborne operation. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 1 - 1st printing. "Japanese Pacific Island Defenses 1941-1945!" Written by Gordon L Rottman. Art by Ian Palmer. The prolonged and bloody fighting for control of the Japanese occupied Pacific islands in World War II is a key point in 20th-century warfare. No two islands were alike in the systems and nature of their defensive emplacements, and local improvization and command preferences affected both materials used and defensive models. This title details the establishment, construction and effectiveness of Japanese temporary and semi-permanent crew-served weapons positions and individual and small-unit fighting positions. Integrated obstacles and minefields, camouflage and the changing defensive principles are also covered. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $18.95.

Volume 58 - 1st printing. "Vietnam Fire Bases 1965-73!" Written by Randy E M Foster. Art by Peter Dennis. Artillery fire support bases of the Freeworld forces played a critical role in the conduct of operations during the Vietnam War. They served to lay down high-volume fire on enemy firing sites, supported friendly infantry operations, and executed harassing fire missions where exact targets were not known. But the firebases themselves - which housed a range of other facilities such as troop shelters, surveillance radars and command centers - had to be defended against ground attack, and as a result became significant fortifications in their own right. This book describes the design, development and operational history of the fire support bases throughout the conflict Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $18.95.

Volume 62 - 1st printing. "Soviet Field Fortifications 1941-45!" Written by Gordon L. Rottman. Art by Chris Taylor and Brian Delf. From June 1941, the Soviets were forced to undertake large-scale defensive operations in the face of the overwhelming German blitzkrieg assault, operations which ran counter to their preference for highly mobile, offensive warfare. Lessons were quickly learned across a wide variety of terrain and climates, including the open steppes, dense forests, wooded swamps, cities, and in snow and ice, where the availability of construction materials differed greatly. The first to cover this topic in the English language and containing detailed information about the trenches, bunkers, observation posts and weapon positions, this book examines field fortifications built from local materials by infantrymen, as well as their use of mines, field camouflage techniques, and construction tools. It provides a first fascinating insight into Russian defensive attempts against the overwhelming might of the German Army. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $18.95.

Cover by E. C. Stoner. Stories and art by E. C. Stoner and others. Dell's Large Feature Comic features the adventures of Dell's first superhero, previouisly seen in The Funnies. Phil Anson returns from his years of study in the Orient with the ability to leave his body, becoming Phantasmo, sort of a cross between the Spectre and Doctor Strange. When he must leave his body behind, he trusts it to his sidekick Whizzer, the bellhop at the hotel where he lives. Phantasmo and Whizzer try to rescue a scientist from foreign spies who want his new miracle fuel formula. Phantasmo uses his ethereal powers to save Whizzer's uncle's farm after the dam collapses. But then he looks closer, and realizes the dam was sabotaged by a crime ring whose next target is New York. Phantasmo and Whizzer discover that an abandoned yacht is actually a front for modern-day pirates armed with torpedoes. While vacationing in the north woods, Phantasmo uses his astral-projection body to fight a forest fire, but his human body is in danger of being consumed by the flames. 8 1/2-in. x 11 1/2-in, 48 pages, B&W.
