In the wake of the Jacobite rebellions, companies of trustworthy Highlanders were raised from royal clans to protect the populace, deter cattle stealing and guard against any possible Jacobite incursion. Soon after its formation, the companies organized into a regiment of foot known famously as the 'Black Watch', the name thought to derive from their dark-coloured tartans and their role to 'watch' the Highlands. This book explores the uniforms, equipment and history of the Black Watch, from their involvement in the battles of Fontenoy and Ticonderoga in the mid-18th century, through to the Korean War of the 1950s. Volume 54 - 2nd and later printings. "Napoleon's Artillery!" Written by Robert Wilkinson-Latham. Art by Michael Roffe. At the end of the Royalist regime, the artillery arm of the French Army was, as Napoleon was later to declare, 'the finest and best composed corps in Europe.' Designed by the great master of artillery, Jean Baptiste de Gribeauval, the equipment consisted of some of the best pieces in Europe. This book examines the equipment and performance of Napoleon's artillery in the Revolutionary Wars, Napoleonic Wars and Waterloo campaign. The organization of the Imperial Army is also covered, including the key French failure to develop 'Shrapnel' or 'spherical case shot' - a weapon used against them to great effect by the British. Volume 160 - 1st printing. "Napoleon's Guard Infantry (2)!" Written by Philip Haythornthwaite. Art by Bryan Fosten. This title looks at Napoleon's Middle and Young Guard infantry. The seniority of Guard infantry was only established definitely in 1812 by the Guard's chief of personnel, Courtois. The title 'Young Guard' was assigned to the newly-raised regiments in 1809, but the term 'Middle Guard' came into use about 1811. From the beginning the newer guard regiments were committed to action first, the Old Guard, as Napoleon wrote, 'being so precious, one fears to expose them'; thus the Fusiliers-Chasseurs distinguished themselves at Hilsberg whilst the rest of the Guard was kept in reserve. In 1808 the Fusiliers went to Spain, serving at the Madrid rising, Medina and Guadalajara. Philip Haythornwaite examines these troops in a detailed text backed by numerous illustrations including eight full page colour plates by Bryan Fosten. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

The end of the American Revolution in 1783 confirmed the independence of the republic of the United States of America from Great Britain. Britain, however, still managed to make its presence felt in North America. Britain's Orders in Council concerning trade were a major irritant which, added to other issues including the sale of Louisiana and the impressment of American soldiers by the Royal Navy, finally caused the United States to declare war on 19 June 1812. This volume examines in detail the organisation, tactics and equipment of the British forces between 1793 and 1815. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 339 - 1st printing. "The King's German Legion (2)!" Written by Mike Chappell. Art by Mike Chappell. This title is the completion of a two-part study of the King's German Legion – the largest and most respected of the foreign corps which fought as integrated elements of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. The light and heavy cavalry, light and line infantry, and horse and foot artillery of the KGL made major contributions to Wellington's victories in the latter part of the Peninsular War, and several units covered themselves with glory at Waterloo. The forces which Wellington led in Portugal and Spain and up into southern France between 1808 and 1814 achieved a consistent record of victory perhaps unmatched in the history of the British Army. Some 40 per cent of this volunteer army were Irishmen – a remarkable figure, given the recent unrest and bloodshed in Ireland. Volume 422 - 1st printing. "German Armies 1870-71 (2)!" Written by Michael Solka. Art by Darko Pavlovic. Although the war of 1870-71 has gone down in history as the 'Franco-Prussian War', nearly half of the German troops sent to the frontier were from other German states - both the willing members of the North German Confederation and the southern states who were in some cases more hesitant about accepting Prussian domination. Some contingents had only one or two regiments - though these might be of high quality, like the 'Black Brunswickers'; others provided whole army corps, like Bavaria and Saxony. This book lists and illustrates the organization and varied uniforms of all these allied contingents, most of which fought well when it came to the test of battle. Softcover, PC/PB&W.
