Volume 41 -2nd and later printings. "Elite Forces of India and Pakistan!" Written by Kenneth Conboy. Art by Paul Hannon. Influenced by the German use of paratroopers early in World War Two, General Sir Robert Cassels, the Commander-in-Chief India, ordered the formation of an airborne cadre in October 1940. Thus marked the origins of India's first élite units. Pakistan can trace the origins of its own army airborne to the common parentage of British-raised forces. Following the partition from India in August 1947, it raised its own Special Service Group, with individually specialised companies including desert, mountain, ranger and underwater warfare units. This remarkable volume by Kenneth Conboy details the history, organisation, uniforms and insignia of the élite forces of India and Pakistan. Also covered are the elite forces of Afghanistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Softcover, PC/PB&W. Cover price $17.95.

Volume 182 - 1st printing. "British Battle Insignia (1)!" Written by Mike Chappell. Art by Mike Chappell. The British soldiers who marched off to war in 1914 wore only regimental insignia, yet by the time of the armistice in November 1918, insignia in the British Army had undergone a considerable change. Now visible was a bewildering display of coloured devices on uniforms, helmets, vehicles, guns, signboards and flags. Regimental badges remained but were joined by divisional insignia. These were rarely seen in the front line. Instead the 'battle patch' had appeared for combat use. In this beautifully illustrated book Mike Chappell looks at the colourful variety of insignia used by the British Army during the Great War. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 397 - 1st printing. "The Austro-Hungarian Forces in World War I (2)!" Written by Peter Jung. Art by Darko Pavlovic. The part played in the Great War by the armies of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy is little known to English-speakers, perhaps because 1918 saw the complete destruction of the Empire. Yet it was of great importance, providing nearly all Central Powers forces on the Italian front, huge numbers on the Russian front, the Balkans and even a contingent in Turkey and Palestine. This second volume describes this complex organisation from the accession of Emperor Karl I in November 1916, through the victory of Caporetto and failure of the Piave offensive, to the final Armistice. The text is supported by tables and insignia charts, and illustrated with rare photographs and colourful plates. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Dedicated to the life of the average US soldier during World War I, this book follows the doughboy during the course of the war: from conscription, arrival at a training facility, transportation to Europe, and finally into combat in the trenches. The evolution of the US Army is discussed, and its organization, the tension between Pershing's desire for "open" warfare and the actual reality of trench warfare is examined in detail. Appearance, equipment and weaponry of the American soldier are all featured, along with vivid descriptions of day-to-day experiences and the shock of combat on the front. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

THE TARANTULA ACT I - In the span of years when Morpheus of the Dreaming was held captive by a human sorcerer, the universe knew someone was missing and tried to replace him. In the late 1930s, haunted by dark dreams, Wesley Dodds, a quiet, studious man, the heir to a fabulous fortune, took to wearing a gasmask and going out at night to battle bizarre criminals with names like the Tarantula, the Mist and the Phantom of the World's Fair. Dodds put his foes to sleep with gas and sprinkled sand on them. Somewhere along the line, they took to calling him the Sandman. The curtain goes up on SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE! Matt Wagner is the regular writer, with rotating artists on each story arc. The first storyline is drawn by Guy Davis. Together, Wagner and Davis team up to create baroque new tales of a mysterious night avenger, combining the relentless plotting of a hardboiled detective novel and the subtle psychological ambiguities of classic film noir. In the premiere issue, Dodds follows the trail of the Tarantula, a mysterious kidnapper who wants the last dance on every young woman's card. Painted photo cover by Gavin Wilson. Suggested for Mature Readers. New Format. Cover price $1.95.
