The second issue of the Flashback reprint series presents Special Edition Comics # 1 originally published in 1941 by Fawcett Publications. This was the only issue of the title. It appeared on the newsstands several months before Captain Marvel Adventures #1, and at the same time Whiz #8 was released. Note the costume of Captain Marvel shown on the cover. In this early version, he has a buckle on his sash with the initial M, does not have a buttoned shirt flap, and his arm bands are a bit different. Cover art by C.C. Beck. "The Menace of Doctor Allirog," script by Bill Parker, art by C.C. Beck; Billy is stunned, like the rest of the crowd, when the challenger in the heavy weight boxing match knocks out the champion with one punc; While trying to get an interview, Billy learns the truth behind what happened and is captured by a giant ape. Beck and Pete Costanza (backgrounds); In 1890, a recluse millionaire, with his dying breath, informs his servant that no one is to enter this house after his death; Anyone doing so will fall under the dying man's curse; Captain Marvel intervenes. "The Hideous Dame Kackle," inks by Charles Nicholas; When U.S. Marine Don Stevens investigates the death of a man who was pushed from an old schooner, it is the Defender who is called to the fore to battle the evil Dame Kackle. "The Origin of The Whizzer," pencils by Al Avison, inks by Al Gabriele; Crook Granno "makes" Dr. Frank kill a patient he is operating on and tells the good doctor to get out of the country---or else!; But Frank's son, now known as the Whizzer, sees things differently and vows revenge on the man who led Dr. Frank to die in the jungles of Africa. The fifth issue of the Flashback reprint series presents Military Comics # 1 originally published in 1941 by Quality Comics Group. The first appearance of Blackhawk. Cover art by Will Eisner. "The Origin of Blackhawk," script by Will Eisner and Bob Powell, art by Chuck Cuidera; Warsaw, Poland 1939; The Nazis are massing to rout the Polish Air Force, the only obstacle to their victory over Poland, and are being led by the Nazi commander, Captain von Tepp; However, in his attack, the brother and sister of a lone survivor are killed, and this survivor, later to become The Blackhawk, vows to hunt down von Tepp and make him pay personally for their deaths. "Flying with the Red Dragon Squadron," art by Bob Powell (as Bud Ernest); The boys lose their contract as test pilots after a crack-up and find themselves being asked to join a group called the Red Dragon Squadron.
