Where better to spend Christmas Eve than...the moon?? A great shocker of a splash page as Mantra finds themself teleported to the moon after seeing a vision of Lukasz's face in it. Great composition from Dodson with Mantra's cape sweeping across the page and framing the Apollo lander and earth above it! Speaking of the lander, the top half of the craft was airbrushed out when someone realized that that portion was what brought the astronauts back! Signed by Dodson in lower margin. A great page from this gothic story that finds Christine Palmer, The Night Nurse, approaching a remote mansion in the middle of a rainstorm. Here we get a short recap of Palmer's somewhat tragic history that's led her to accept this mysterious job. Absolutely beautiful work by Mortimer here, especially in the inking on the closeup of Christine in panel three. Pencil and ink on comic art board. 10 1/2" x 16". The final appearance of Black Orchid until Blue Devil Annual #1 in 1984 leaves both the cast of the story and readers in the dark about the hero's true identity! In the aftermath of an attempted bank robbery perpetrated by Orchid impersonators, Ronne Kuhn (herself a Orchid impersonator, but a good one) gets to take a bit of the credit for saving the day as the real hero has once again mysteriously disappeared. A dead hero, a perverse sex tape, a former superteam now bitterly feuding- it's the perfect recipe for a case that only Detectives Pilgrim and Walker could handle! Here we see Pilgrim and Walker alongside NYPD Detective Mack attempting to interview former Unity member Ultrabright who has the power to compel men to do her bidding. After Pilgrim makes a crack about her aging body, Ultrabright powers up and suits up and tells the investigators to kick rocks. Signed by Oeming in the second panel. Expelled from the secret hideway, she wanders the swamps of Florida only to find herself in the clutches of the Man-Thing. Brigman and Patterson do a neat trick here, slowly dropping detail from the image as the eye moves further 'back' into it, creating a great sense of focus on our hero.
