Volume 15 - 1st printing. "Soviet Aces of World War 2!" Written by Hugh Morgan. Art by John Weal. No single volume in English has ever appeared in the West dealing with this intriguing subject area, but now that restrictions have relaxed in the former Soviet Union, records of the deeds of the elite pilots of the various Soviet Air Forces are coming to light. Although initially equipped with very poor aircraft, and robbed of effective leadership thanks as much to Stalin's purges in the late 1930s as to the efforts of the Luftwaffe, Soviet fighter pilots soon turned the tables through the use of both lend-lease aircraft like the Hurricane, Spitfire, P-39 and P-40, and home-grown machines like the MiG-3, LaGG-3/5, Lavochkin La-5/7/9 and the Yak-1/3. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $22.95.

Volume 307 - 1st printing. "Late Imperial Chinese Armies 1520–1840!" Written by CJ Peers. Art by Christa Hook. By the end of the 18th century – following an era which had seen the world increasingly divided into colonial powers and their victims – the Ch'ing dynasty of the Manchus, who had overthrown the native Ming in the 1640s, ruled over the largest and most populous empire in the world, with territories that had doubled in size in the previous few decades. Chris Peers' engaging study of the late imperial Chinese armies from 1520 to 1840 is supported by a wealth of illustrations and photographs, including eight attractive full page colour plates by Christa Hook. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 308 - 1st printing. "Louis XV's Army (4)!" Written by René Chartrand. Art by Eugene Leliepvre. The emergence of light troops at the time of Louis XV's reign is a sign of the search for better intelligence of the enemy and rapid tactical moves on battlefields. This fourth instalment of René Chartrand's review of Louis XV's army reveals an extraordinary variety of units, most now long forgotten, who had a dazzling assortment of uniforms, equipment and weapons, as is revealed by this interesting text and its numerous accompanying illustrations, which include eight full page colour plates by Eugène Lelièpvre. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 309 - 1st printing. "The Italian Invasion of Abyssinia 1935–36!" Written by David Nicolle. Art by Raffaele Ruggeri. In October 1935 Mussolini ordered the invasion of Ethiopia from Italian-held Eritrea and Somaliland, thinking that he would easily crush an ill-prepared and badly equipped enemy. The Italians, in the face of widespread condemnation from the League of Nations, spread terror and destruction through their indiscriminate use of air power and poison gas against an enemy more used to medieval methods of warfare. David Nicolle examines in detail the units, equipment and uniforms of the forces on both sides of this conflict that unrealistically bolstered Il Duce's colonial ambitions. A great read ably supported by Raffaele Ruggeri's detailed full-page colour plates. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Drawing spectacular landscapes, fantastic interiors, and other wildly animated backgrounds for cartoon art demands skill at constructing correct perspective to fit the confines of a comic-strip panel.

An acclaimed cartoonist now shares his trade secrets for drawing illusions of depth, vanishing points, and other aspects of convincing perspective.

Readers learn how to use light and shadow in drawing cartoon perspective; deal with overlapping, diffusion, and convergence; master one-, two-, and three-point perspective; create extra-wide angles suited to a cartoon-panel format; and find shortcuts for suggesting spatial depth.

Queen of the Damned HC (1988 A Knopf Novel) The Vampire Chronicles 1-REP

    (see more images)

2nd and later printings. By Anne Rice. In 1976, a uniquely seductive world of vampires was unveiled in the now-classic Interview with the Vampire . . . in 1985, a wild and voluptous voice spoke to us, telling the story of The Vampire Lestat. In The Queen of the Damned, Anne Rice continues her extraordinary Vampire Chronicles in a feat of mesmeric storytelling, a chillingly hypnotic entertainment in which the oldest and most powerful forces of the night are unleashed on an unsuspecting world. Three brilliantly colored narrative threads intertwine as the story unfolds: – The rock star known as Vampire Lestat, worshipped by millions of spellbound fans, prepares for a concert in San Francisco. Among the audience–pilgrims in a blind swoon of adoration–are hundreds of vampires, creatures who see Lestat as a greedy fiend risking the secret prosperity of all his kind just to be loved and seen by mortals, fiends themselves who hate Lestats power and who are determined to destroy him . . . – The sleep of certain men and women–vampires and mortals scattered around the world–is haunted by a vivid, mysterious dream: of twins with fiery red hair and piercing green eyes who suffer an unspeakable tragedy. It is a dream that slowly, tauntingly reveals its meaning to the dreamers as they make their way toward each other–some to be destroyed on the journey, some to face an even more terrifying fate at journeys end . . . – Akasha–Queen of the Damned, mother of all vampires, rises after a 6,000 year sleep and puts into motion a heinous plan to save mankind from itself and make all myths of the world real by elevating herself and her chosen son/lover to the level of the gods: I am the fulfillment and I shall from this moment be the cause . . . These narrative threads wind sinuously across a vast, richly detailed tapestry of the violent, sensual world of vampirism, taking us back 6,000 years to its beginnings. As the stories of the first brood of blood drinkers are revealed, we are swept across the ages, from Egypt to South America to the Himalayas to all the shrouded corners of the globe where vampires have left their mark. Vampires are created–mortals succumbing to the sensation of being enptied, of being devoured, of being nothing. Vampires are destroyed. Dark rituals are performed–the rituals of ancient creatures prowling the modern world. And, finally, we are brought to a moment in the twentieth century when, in an astonishing climax, the fate of the living dead–and perhaps of the living, all the living–will be decided. Hardcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 448 pages, Text Only. Cover price $27.50.
