  • Issue #107
Comic Book Marketplace (1991 Gemstone) 107

Soon after Action Comics #1 hit the newsstands in 1938, it became clear that comic books were the next big thing. Victor S. Fox was, at that time, an accountant for DC comics, and he lost no time in leaving DC and setting up his own comic titles, starting with Wonderman in Wonder Comics #1. After DC won a lawsuit that claimed that Wonderman was a rip-off of Superman, Fox quickly branched out into titles like Mystery Men, Fantastic, Science, Blue Beetle, Weird and The Flame. CBM #107 tells the story of Victor Fox from 1938 through the early 1950s. Also including our regular features! Magazine, PC $6.95 Cover price $6.95.

The theme of CBM #110 centers on those comic artists who use the medium of painting for their covers and interior stories. Since the beginnings of comic books in the 1930s, this has been a medium in which the artwork was always done in ink with a brush or pen, with the coloring added in the printing process. But in recent years, artists like Alex Ross, Scott Hampton, Joe Jusko, David Mack, John K Snyder III, Steve Rude, Bill Sienkiewicz and John Van Fleet have been creating fully rendered paintings for their covers and interior pages. And then there's Carl Barks and Alex Schomberg, who, after a lifetime of creating ink art, turned to painting in their retirement to create paintings for fans. Don't miss an intriguing look into a highly specialized area of comics creation, along with the usual great CBM features. COVER A: ALEX ROSS?Magazine, PC $6.95 COVER B: NORM SAUNDERS?Magazine, PC $6.95 Cover price $6.95.

  • Issue #114
Comic Book Marketplace (1991 Gemstone) 114

We all know that EC's Tales From the Crypt, Vault of Horror and Haunt of Fear started a New Trend in comics which other publishers were quick to imitate. After being virtually eradicated by the Comics Code in the mid-1950s, horror comics have struggled back to the newsstand in the form of magazines like Creepy and Eerie in the 1960s and 1970s. What is the future of horror comics? That's the question we pose in Comic Book Marketplace #114. We've also got great columns by: Michelle Nolan ? Nolan's Notebook and That Wonderful Year; Bill Baker ? Inspiration Central; Pat Calhoun ? Weird Words; Michael Naiman ? The Naiman Report; Mike Wilbur ? Collectable Character Statues. Most comic books are a collaborative creation of many minds. The concept, the writing, the layout, the penciling, the inking and the lettering can involve the talents of many people. But there were a few creators of comic books, like Will Eisner, Carl Barks, Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman and John Stanley, who produced their works as solo efforts. These are the auteurs of comics. CBM #115 takes a look at these giants. We've also got great columns by: Michelle Nolan ? Nolan's Notebook and That Wonderful Year, Bill Baker ? Inspiration Central, Pat Calhoun ? Weird Words, Michael Naiman ? The Naiman Report, and Mike Wilbur ? Collectable Character Statues. Magazine, PC $6.95 Cover price $6.95.

In Comic Book Marketplace #116 we take a look at a serious topic: First, how Jews created the comic book in the first place, and then, how crusading publishers like William M. Gaines used this medium to fight against racism and anti-Semitism in stories like "Judgment Day," "Master Race" and the regular series of "preachies" which appeared in Shock SuspenStories in the early 1950s. Finally, how comics creators like Will Eisner, Joe Kubert and Art Spiegleman are using the medium to re-address these issues today, in the format of graphic novels. We've also got great columns by: Michelle Nolan ? Nolan's Notebook and That Wonderful Year; Bill Baker ? Inspiration Central; Pat Calhoun ? Weird Words; Michael Naiman ? The Naiman Report; and Mike Wilbur ? Collectable Character Statues. Magazine, PC$6.95 Cover price $6.95.

  • Issue #119
Comic Book Marketplace (1991 Gemstone) 119

After humble beginnings in the late nineteenth century, newspaper comic strips had become an important mass medium by 1920, the year of the first network radio broadcast. It didn't take radio long to become very popular. Then when newsstand comic books started appearing in the late 1930s, another new mass medium was born. All these media were voracious consumers of programming, and crossovers from one medium to another became the rule rather than the exception. CBM #119 examines the crossovers between network radio shows and comic books. Nolan's Notebook and That Wonderful Year by Michelle Nolan; Inspiration Central by Bill Baker; Collectable Character Statues by Mike Wilbur; CBM Market Reports by our Advisors; The Naiman Report by Michael Naiman; Marketplace Mail and much, much more!
