Watchmen Commission by Dave Gibbons 2007 Inarguably essential to comics as a medium and superhero comics as a genre, Gibbons and Alan Moore's Watchmen is a landmark work that persists as required reading to this day nearly forty years after its initial release. This truly phenomenal piece is bittersweet in a way, depicting the cast in a classic superhero pose- something that was never in the cards for these costumed adventurers. Gibbons' depictions and posing are wonderful with small touches that subtly allude to the story- The Comedian's cynical smile and lit cigar during an action moment, Ozymandias' undeniably knowing expression, Nite Owl's paunch paired with an expression of renewed determination, Silk Spectre II's look of uncertainty, Rorschach's loose jacket straps mirroring his iconic mask, and of course Dr. Manhattan above and outside of the rest of the group all posed around the central, looming image of the Doomsday Clock.
