All of the Marvels SC (2023 Penguin Classics) 1-1ST

    (see more images)

1st printing. By Douglas Wolk. The Marvel story is a gigantic mountain, smack in the middle of contemporary culture. Thousands of writers and artists have contributed to it. Every schoolchild recognizes its protagonists: Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men. 18 of the 100 highest-grossing movies of all time are directly based on parts of it. And not even the people telling the story have read the whole thing-nobody's supposed to. So, of course, that's what Wolk did: he read all 27,000 comics that make up the Marvel universe thus far, from Alpha Flight to Omega the Unknown. And then he made sense of it: seeing into the ever-expanding story, in its parts and as a coherent whole, and seeing through it, as a prism through which to view the landscape of American culture. Looking over close to sixty years of Marvel's comics, Wolk sees fascinating patterns and the way they all feed into a potent cosmology that echoes our deepest hopes and fears. Softcover, 5-in. x 7-in., 384 pages, Text (with B&W Illustrations). Cover price $18.00.

American Way HC (2023 Simon and Schuster) A True Story of Nazi Escape, Superman, and Marilyn Monroe 1-1ST

    (see more images)

    1st printing.

By Helene Stapinski and Bonnie Siegler.

Family lore had it that Bonnie Siegler's grandfather crossed paths in Midtown Manhattan late one night in 1954 with Marilyn Monroe, her white dress flying up around her as she filmed a scene for The Seven Year Itch. Jules Schulback had his home movie camera with him, capturing what would become the only surviving footage of that legendary night.

Bonnie wasn't sure she quite believed her grandfather's story... until, cleaning out his apartment, she found the film reel. The discovery would prompt her to investigate all of her grandfather's seemingly tall tales-and lead her in pursuit of a remarkable piece of forgotten history bridging old Hollywood, the birth of the comic book, and the Holocaust.

The American Way is a vivacious story of two very different men both striving to make their way in New York, their lives intersecting with a glittering array of luminaries, from Billy Wilder and Joe DiMaggio to Superman creators Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel.

    Hardcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 384 pages, Text (with B&W photos and illustrations).

Art of Pulp Fiction HC (2021 IDW) An Illustrated History of Vintage Paperbacks 1-1ST

    (see more images)

    1st printing.

Edited by Ed Hulse. Introduction by Richard A. Lupoff. Cover by George Gross, Barye Phillips, and Rudolph Belarski. Back Cover by James Bama and Victor Kalin.

Judge these books by their covers! Get immersed in the definitive visual history of pulp fiction paperbacks from 1940 to 1970.

The Art of Pulp Fiction: An Illustrated History of Vintage Paperbacks chronicles the history of pocket-sized paperbound books designed for mass-market consumption, specifically concentrating on the period from 1940 to 1970. These three decades saw paperbacks eclipse cheap pulp magazines and expensive clothbound books as the most popular delivery vehicle for escapist fiction. To catch the eyes of potential buyers they were adorned with covers that were invariably vibrant, frequently garish, and occasionally lurid. Today the early paperbacks-like the earlier pulps, inexpensively produced and considered disposable by casual readers-are treasured collector's items.

Award-winning editor Ed Hulse (The Art of the Pulps and The Blood 'n' Thunder Guide to Pulp Fiction) comprehensively covers the pulp-fiction paperback's heyday. Hulse writes the individual chapter introductions and the captions, while a team of genre specialists and art aficionados contribute the special features included in each chapter. These focus on particularly important authors, artists, publishers, and sub-genres.

Illustrated with more than 500 memorable covers and original cover paintings. Hulse's extensive captions, meanwhile, offer a running commentary on this significant genre, and also contain many obscure but entertaining factoids. Images used in The Art of Pulp Fiction have been sourced from the largest American paperback collections in private hands, and have been curated with rarity in mind, as well as graphic appeal. Consequently, many covers are reproduced here for the first time since the books were first issued.

With an overall Introduction by Richard A. Lupoff, novelist, essayist, pop-culture historian, and author of The Great American Paperback (2001).

    Hardcover, 10-in.x 10-in., 240 pages, full color.

    Cover price $49.99.

Bending Steel: Modernity and the American Superhero HC (2015 PYR) 1-1ST

1st printing. By Aldo J. Regalado. Bending Steel examines the historical origins and cultural significance of Superman and his fellow American crusaders. The cultural conversation articulated through the nation's early heroic fiction eventually led to a new heroic type - the brightly clad, super-powered, pro-social action heroes that first appeared in American comic books starting in the late 1930s. Tracing superhero fiction all the way back to the nineteenth century, Regalado explores the roles played by creators, producers, and consumers in crafting superhero fiction, ultimately concluding that these narratives are essential for understanding vital trajectories in American culture. Hardcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 288 pages, Text (with B&W Chapter Illustrations and photos). Cover price $60.00.

    1st printing.

Written by Marc Tyler Nobleman. Art and cover by Ty Templeton.

Every Batman story is marked with the words "Batman created by Bob Kane." But that isn't the whole truth.

A struggling writer named Bill Finger was involved from the beginning. Bill helped invent Batman, from concept to costume to character. He dreamed up Batman's haunting origins and his colorful nemeses. Despite his brilliance, Bill worked in obscurity. It was only after his death that fans went to bat for Bill, calling for acknowledgment that he was the co-creator of Batman.

Based on original research, Bill the Boy Wonder is the first-ever book about the unsung man behind the Dark Knight.

Hardcover, 8-in. x 11-in., 48 pages, Text (with full color illustrations and photos).

Volume 3 - 1st printing. "George Pérez!" Written by Patrick L Hamilton. Art by George Perez. Cover by Antony Hare. Born in the South Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, artist and writer George Pérez (1954-2022) cut his teeth in the 1970s as an artist at Marvel who worked on lesser titles like The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu and Creatures on the Loose, and then mainstays like Fantastic Four and The Avengers. In the 1980s, Pérez jumped ship to DC where he helped turn The New Teen Titans into a top-selling title and co-created Crisis on Infinite Earths, which marked the publisher's fiftieth anniversary and consolidated its sprawling universe. As writer and artist, Pérez relaunched DC's Wonder Woman, a run that later inspired much of the 2017 film. Though Pérez's style is highly recognizable, his contributions to comic art and history have not been fully acknowledged. In George Pérez, author Patrick L. Hamilton addresses this neglect, first, by discussing Pérez's artistic style within the context of Bronze Age superhero art, and second, by analyzing Pérez's work for its representations of race, disability, and gender. Though he struggled with deadlines and health issues in the 1990s, Pérez would reintroduce himself and his work to a new generation of comics fans with a return to Marvel's The Avengers, as well as attempts at various creator-owned comics, the last of these being Sirens from Boom! Studios in 2014. Throughout his career, Pérez established a dynamic and minutely detailed style of comic art that was both unique and influential. Softcover, 5 1/2-in. x 8-in., 128 pages, Text (with full color Illustrations). Cover price $20.00.
