  • Issue #13
Hulk Comic (1979-1980 Marvel UK) Hulk Weekly 13

May 30, 1979. Hulk (Parkhouse/Neary/Richardson), the Black Knight (Parkhouse/Neary/Stokes), Nick Fury (Moore/Dillon), Ant-Man (Lieber/Heck), the Eternals (Kirby), and Night-Raven (Parkhouse/Lloyd). This title lasted 63 issues before merging with Marvel UK's Spider-Man title. Like many titles published by the company under Dez Skinn, Hulk Comic featured new material produced by British creators such as Steve Dillon, David Lloyd and Steve Parkhouse, along with a smattering of American reprints drawn from the Lee/Kirby Marvel back-catalogue. Once Skinn was replaced by Paul Neary, however, the title's original output dwindled, being supplanted by an increasing number of reprints. The title included new Hulk material drawn by Dave (Watchmen) Gibbons and Steve (Preacher) Dillon. This material was significant in that it portrayed the illiterate, wandering Hulk of the 1970s television series. Once the title began featuring American reprints, it chose to display the Marvel Universe Hulk as depicted by Sal Buscema. Hulk Weekly is best remembered for reviving Captain Britain, which had previously been US-originated material. Other original work included Nick Fury also drawn by Steve Dillon and a new Black Knight strip which also featured Captain Britain. These original stories were mostly restricted to the first 20 issues of the title, before tailing off to make way for U.S. reprints, with the Black Knight strip running through most further issues until the title's cancellation. Nevertheless, Hulk Comic is particularly significant for launching the character of Night Raven by Steve Parkhouse and David Lloyd. Night Raven is one of several Marvel UK characters to eventually made the jump to the mainstream (US) Marvel Universe.

    Jazz Legend (2018 Scout) 2

Written by Jc Lacek. Art by Vasco Duarte. Cover by Adrian Sibar. Local jazz legend, Martin Comity, has seen better days. After experimenting with a new street drug, his already debaucherous lifestyle descends into paranoia as he suspects the drug's visions to be real. To learn the truth, Martin recruits Benjamin Way, a peculiar novelist with experience in matters of 'altered states', to try the mysterious drug for himself. Ben's jovial reluctance turns to earth-shattering revelation as the drug reveals a surreal world no amount of experience could have ever prepared him for. Jazz Legend is a neo-noir meets cosmic fantasy inspired by the lives and works of jazz great Miles Davis, and the father of beat literature, Mr. William S. Burroughs. 28 pages, full color. Jingle Belle Winter Wingding (2002) 1

Cover by Chynna Clugston-Major. Stories by Paul Dini and Stephen DeStefano. Art by Tony Cervone, Spike Brandt and Stephen DeStefano. It's Paul Dini's annual Christmas celebration, and he's invited Santa's bratty daughter again. Jingle Belle may be the coolest thing in the North Pole, but that's sort of like being the handsomest guy in comics (if you get my self-deprecating drift; we ain't models for a reason!). This means a life filled with ho-ho-humdrum, so what's a girl to do but stir up a little trouble? Makes it hard, though, when Mrs. Claus sits down to write her yearly holiday letter. How does one sugarcoat her daughter's many arrests, mishaps, and hang-ups? And she's got plenty to explain this year when Jing starts an all-girl band with Tashi, Polly Green and Texas supergal Ida Red! The main story is by Dini and Warner Bros. animators Tony Cervone and Spike Brandt, with an eight-page Santa Claus story by original Jingle Belle artist Stephen DeStefano! 32 pages, B&W. Cover price $2.95.
