Dime Press #4 (estimated print run was 2,000, released only in Italy), featuring the first appearance of Hellboy (predates Hellboy's appearance in Next Men #21 (December, 1993). Dime Press is an independent Italian comic book publisher which produced a series of 22 comics on various Italian characters (Dylan Dog, Tex, Nathan Never. Etc.). From an interview with Mike Mignola: "The Dime Press...is the first drawing of the Hellboy that more or less exists today (stone hand, etc)... The '91 drawing is the first time I used the name Hellboy, but hadn't yet thought of creating an actual series about the character...the character from '91 bears little resemblance to the modern version of Hellboy." Order of earliest appearances: 1) May 1993, FIRST appearance of Hellboy in Dime Press #4 (cover designed by Nicola Mari and Mike Mignola which shows Nathan Never and the early concept Hellboy; 2) August 1993, San Diego Comic Con #2 with first Hellboy American appearance and story; 3) December 1993, first appearance of Hellboy in color and in a nationally released comic, Next Men #21. 6 1/4" x 8 1/4", b&w, 82 pages.
