Volume 82 - 1st printing. "V-2 Ballistic Missile 194252!" Written by Steven J Zaloga. Art by Robert Calow. The German A-4 ballistic missile, better known by its propaganda name of V-2, was the world's first successful ballistic missile, breaking through the atmosphere to reach its target quicker. It was a forerunner of Cold War ballistic missiles and its combat use in 1944-45 set the pattern for the use of Scud ballistic missiles in recent decades. The V-2 offensive lasted from September 1944 until March 1945 with over 3,000 rockets being launched. This book examines the combat record of the V-2 in World War II, with a special focus on how a German missile battalion actually prepared and fired its missiles. Softcover, 48 pages, PC/PB&W. Volume 132 - 1st printing. "The First Crusade 1096-99!" Written by David Nicolle. Art by Christa Hook. In 1095 the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I appealed to the Christian states of western Europe for help against the Turks who had swept across the Empire after the disastrous Byzantine defeat at Manzikert in 1071. This book is about the First Crusade that followed, and saw several armies of 'armed pilgrims' march across Europe to the Holy Land. They were unleashed on a divided and fragmented Islamic world and won a series of apparently miraculous victories, capturing the Holy City of Jerusalem itself. The success of the First Crusade was never to be repeated, however, and triggered two centuries of bitter warfare, the repercussions of which are still felt today. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 93 - 1st printing. "American War of Independence Commanders!" Written by René Chartrand. Art by Richard Hook. The commanders who led the opposing armies of the American War of Independence came from remarkably different backgrounds. They included not only men from Britain and America, but from Germany, France and Spain as well. Some were from the great families of the Old World, while others were frontiersmen or farmers in the New World. Despite their differing origins, all were leaders in the events that led to the establishment of the United States of America. This book details the appearance, careers and personalities of the commanders on both sides. It covers such famous figures as George Washington and Lord Cornwallis along with less well-known men such as Admiral Suffren and Bernando de Galvez. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

Volume 56 - 1st printing. "The Zulu War 1879!" By Ian Knight. The Zulu War of 1879 remains one of the best known British colonial wars and included two battles whose names reverberate through history. At Isandlwana the Zulus inflicted a crushing defeat on the British; the gallant British defence at Rorke's Drift followed and re-established British prestige. Yet as this book shows, there was more to the war than this. Six months of brutal fighting followed, until the Zulu kingdom was broken up, its king imprisoned and the whole structure of the Zulu state destroyed. Years of internecine strife followed, until the British finally annexed Zululand as a colonial possession. Softcover, 96 ages, PC/PB&W Cover price $17.95.

Volume 58 - 1st printing. "The English Civil Wars 1642-1651!" By Peter Gaunt. The period 1642-1651, one of the most turbulent in the history of mainland Britian, saw the country torn by civil wars. Focusing on the English and Welsh wars this book examines the causes, course and consequences of the conflicts. While offering a concise military account that assesses the wars in their national, regional and local contexts, Dr Gaunt provides a full appraisal of the severity of the wars and the true extent of the impact on civilian life, highlighting areas of continued historical debate. The personal experiences and biographies of key players are also included in this comprehensive and fascinating account. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 9 - 1st printing. "English Civil War Fortifications 164251!" Written by Peter Harrington. Art by Donato Spedaliere. The techniques of European warfare were transformed during the 15th and 16th centuries by the use of gunpowder and by substantial progress in the effectiveness and destructive power of artillery. The series of conflicts in the 1640s, known collectively as the English Civil War, was the first in the British Isles that reflected this new reality. Sieges that aimed at isolating and reducing fortified places became the dominant instrument for prosecuting the war and protective fortifications were vital, for both the besieged as well as the besieger. This title describes how both the Parliamentarians and the Royalists made use of new fortification techniques throughout the course of this conflict. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $18.95.

Volume 10 - 1st printing. "The Maginot Line 1928-45!" Written by William Allcorn. Art by Jeff Vanelle and Vincent Boulanger. The Maginot Line, the massive series of fortifications built by France in the 1930s to defend its borders with Germany and Italy, is perhaps the most maligned collection of fortifications ever built. Despite being a technological marvel, and the most sophisticated and complex set of fortifications built up to that time, it failed to save France from crushing defeat in 1940. Yet there are those who argue that it accomplished exactly what it was designed to do. This book provides a concise and informative treatment of the Maginot Line, from North-East France to the Mediterranean. Packed with plans, contemporary and modern images, plus digital artwork, it presents a detailed visual exploration of this famous fortification system. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $18.95.

Volume 11 - 1st printing. "Crusader Castles of the Teutonic Knights Part 1!" Written by Stephen Turnbull. Art by Peter Dennis. Throughout their stormy history the Teutonic Knights of Germany have always been the most controversial brotherhood ever to call themselves 'Knights of Christ'.They were the most warlike of the religious orders, and this is reflected in the architecture they left behind. In contrast to the Templars who are remembered for their churches, the Teutonic memorials are the magnificent brick-built castles they built as a result of their conquest of Prussia between 1230 and 1380. Many of these dramatic fortresses still exist today in what is now Poland and provide a unique example of an architectural style that closely reflects the nature of the Order. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $18.95.

Volume 394 - 1st printing. "The German Army in World War I (1)!" Written by Nigel Thomas. Art by Gerry Embleton. In August 1914 the mobilization of Imperial Germany's 800,000-strong army ushered in the first great war of the modern age - a war which still stands as the greatest slaughter of soldiers in history. That German Army is also the best example of a particular period of military thought, when virtually the whole manpower of the European nations was integrated into mass conscript armies, supported by several age categories of reservists and by dedicated industrial and transport systems. In this first of three volumes the author offers an extraordinary mass of information, in text and tables, illustrated by photographs and colour plates. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 395 - 1st printing. "Tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy!" Written by Michael G Johnson. Art by Jonathan Smith. The Five (later Six) Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy were central to the story of the white colonization of the American Northeast. The European fur trade transformed their world, and the struggles between English and French colonists forced the tribes to take sides. Sir William Johnson's efforts in the Mohawk Valley ensured that the Iroquois Nations were allies of the British crown; and the loyalty of his kinsman Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea) during the American Revolution forced the Mohawks into Canadian exile. This richly illustrated book introduces Iroquois history, social organization, religion and material culture. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 396 - 1st printing. "Medieval Scandinavian Armies (1)!" Written by David Lindholm and David Nicolle. Art by Angus McBride. While Scandinavia's 'Viking Age' is one of the most studied aspects of early medieval history, much less has been published about the centuries that followed. Yet the armies of Sweden, Norway and Denmark offer fascinating differences from the rest of medieval Western Europe, both in their organisation and their war gear - due partly to their remoteness, climate and terrain, but partly to their long freedom from the feudal system of other kingdoms. This book explains the special nature of Scandinavian armies, shaped by the relative weakness of kings and aristocrats, and the contrasts between the separate nations of the North. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Written by John Layman. Art and Cover by Dave Crosland. In the dark of night, amid the shadows of a dingy alley, Aaron Owens witnesses something he shouldn't have -- and now he's on the run for his life. Aaron's strange odyssey through "the 'hood" take one bizarre turn, and then another, and his path leads him from the seamy side of celebrity to the most wretched despair of Skid Row. Those three stone killahs aren't gonna stop until they've caught up with Aaron. Worse still, this dragon suit is really starting to smell. 32 pages, B&W. Mature Readers. Cover price $2.95.
