Forbidden Worlds (1951 ACG) comic books 1958

  • Issue #65
    Forbidden Worlds (1951 ACG) 65

Cover by Ogden Whitney. Edited by Richard E. Hughes. Story by Richard Hughes. Art by John Forte and Ogden Whitney. An anthology series featuring tales of fantasy and science fiction adventure from legendary early independent comics publisher ACG. This issue was clearly inspired by the Sputnik crisis, as the lead story directly references the launch of the first Russian satellite in late 1957. The highlight is the classic Cold War story There's a New Moon Tonight!, an epic 15-page time-capsule of Cold War paranoia and Space Race history from Herbie creators Richard Hughes and Ogden Whitney, in which the response to Sputnik from the top-secret Bureau of Space Penetration naturally results in conflict with an alien civilization. Also, a Nazi encounters his birth parents during the purge of a city; World War II partisans are aided by the spirit of a historical military commander. Fun cover and art from Ogden Whitney on the Sputnik crisis story; also includes a full-page Honor House ad for a kids Jet Rocket Space Ship. There's a New Moon Tonight!; Wartime Episode; No Place to Hide!; What's the Answer?; Return of a Hero! 32 pages, Full Color. Cover price $0.10.

Cover by Ogden Whitney. Edited by Richard E. Hughes. Art by Ogden Whitney, John Forte and Emil Gershwin. Cover by Ogden Whitney. A new era begins for the formerly straight-faced science-fiction anthology from legendary early independent comics publisher ACG. This issue introduces a rotund, bespectacled kid named Herbie who cares for nothing but his lollipop. Nevertheless, he can fly, talk to animals, intimidate alien invaders, consult with world leaders, and charm any woman. He also manages to save a shipwrecked U.S. Senator. Thus is born one of the great unheralded heroes of 1950s comics. Also, a theater agent insults the wrong stage magician; A WWII fighter pilot gets shot down and finds himself on board a pirate ship in the distant past. Herbie's Quiet Saturday Afternoon!; Magic Maker; Thanksgiving Day!; The Riddle of Robert O'Malley! 32 pages, Full Color. Cover price $0.10.
