Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's Watchmen has been widely hailed as a landmark in the development of the graphic novel. 1st printing. By Gregory L. Reece. Vampires and werewolves; phantoms and phantasms: looming out of the fog leaps the menacing spectre of the lycanthrope, ghoul or blood-crazed zombie. Intrigued by some of the most sinister, yet at the same time most compelling, legends of western civilization, Gregory L Reece dusts down his stake and crucifix, loads his silver bullets and takes off into the wilds in search of answers and fresh adventures. Rummaging around in crumbling tombs and cobwebbed sarcophagi, his latest quest leads him into the haunted realm of the dead and the undead: of those carnivorous, nocturnal hunters that might perhaps better be left undisturbed. Why, he asks, is our culture obsessed by the eerie and the macabre? Why, despite its horrors, does the 'dark side' of the supernatural - its seances and ghost-hunting, demonic possession and the occult - call to us with such dangerous allure? Whether tracking night-stalking werewolves, chanting black magic mantras with Satanists, or interviewing a funereal modern-day Count Dracula, Reece is determined to uncover the truth. A wry exploration of a secret and secretive subculture, "Creatures of the Night" is at the same time a bold and startling journey into a wraithlike world that has so often seemed to lie beyond the limits of rational comprehension - until now. Softcover, 5-in. x 7-in., 208 pages, text (with B&W Illustrations).

Edited by Thomas Giddens.
In this edited collection, scholars from a variety of disciplines examine comics by addressing materiality and form as well as the wider economic and political contexts of comics' creation and reception. Through this lens, influenced by poststructuralist theories, contributors explore and elaborate other possibilities for working with comics as a critical resource, consolidating the emergence of these alternative modes of engagement in a single text.
This opens comics studies to a wider array of resources, perspectives, and modes of engagement. Featuring contributions by Christopher Pizzino, Lisa DeTora, Yasemin J. Erden, Timothy D. Peters, Lydia Wysocki, Maggie Gray, Paul Fisher Davies, Nicola Streeten, Vladislav Maksimov, Peter Goodrich, Matthew J.A. Green, Adam Gearey and Thomas Giddens.

Before Batman and Superman were even a glimmer in Bill Finger and Jerry Siegel's eyes, Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson created National Allied Publications, which would then go on to become DC Comics; one of the largest comic publishers in the world. This groundbreaking book explores the history of DC Comics before it became the behemoth we know today; the pulp stories that formed the basis for all the different kinds of comics that exist today. Titles included in this historical reprint include Barry O'Neill and Fang Gow (script: Wheeler-Nicholson; art: Leo O'Mealia), Blood Pearls (script: Wheeler-Nicholson; art: Munson Paddock), Foe of the Borgias (script and art: Sven Elven), The Golden Dragon (script and art- Tom Hickey), and more!
All the comics included in this tome have been painstakingly reproduced and repaired to show how they would have looked back in the 1930s; and also included are all the pulps that the comics were based on! With an essay from Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson on the formation of National Allied Publications, an introduction by Jim Steranko, and an afterward by comics historian Tom Andrae.
