Merchant of Venice GN (2008 Candlewick Press) 1-1ST

Candlewick Press Edition - 1st printing. Based on the story by William Shakespeare. Adapted by Gareth Hinds. With elegant, contemporary artwork and a faithful, but succinct adaptation, Gareth Hinds (Beowulf) casts Shakspeare's classic drama in a provocative new light. Young Bassanio, wishing to win the love of the fair Portia, entangles his dearest friend, Antonio, in a dangerous bargain with the moneylender Shylock. Only Bassanio's heartfelt efforts - and a clever intervention by Portia - will save Antonio from paying Shylock "a pound of flesh." Suitable for both students and scholars, Hinds' adaptation maintains the language of Shakespeare's play and offers context for the play's controversial aspects with an afterword that both illuminates the process of adaptation and further reading to place Shakespeare in context. Moody and mesmerizing, this graphic novel adaptation of one of Shakespeare's most controversial plays boasts a chic modern cast, high drama, and all the dark, familiar beauty of Venice. Softcover, 74 pages, PC. Cover price $11.99.

  • Issue #189-1ST
Osprey Campaign Series SC (1990-2011 OSPREY) 189-1ST

Volume 189 - 1st printing. "Sevastopol 1942!" Written by Robert Forczyk. Art by Howard Gerrard. In late July 1941, Hitler ordered Army Group South to seize the Crimea as part of its operations to secure the Ukraine and the Donets Basin, in order to protect the vital Romanian oil refineries at Ploesti from Soviet air attack. After weeks of heavy fighting, the Germans breached the Soviet defences and overran most of the Crimea. By November 1941 the only remaining Soviet foothold in the area was the heavily fortified naval base at Sevastopol. Operation Sturgeon Haul, the final assault on Sevastopol, was one of the very few joint service German operations of World War II, with two German corps and a Romanian corps supported by a huge artillery siege train, the Luftwaffe's crack VIII Flieger Korps and a flotilla of S-Boats provided by the Kriegsmarine. This volume closely examines the impact of logistics, weather and joint operational planning upon the last major German victory of World War II. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

  • Issue #72-1ST
Osprey Fortress Series SC (2003) 72-1ST

Volume 72 - 1st printing. "German V-Weapon Sites 1943-45!" Written by Steven J Zaloga. Art by Hugh Johnson and Chris Taylor. Designed to change the course of the war, the V weapons required ambitious plans to defend their expensive and complicated launch sites. Steven J Zaloga describes the configuration and planned deployment of heavy missile sites, as well as the unique Allied tactics developed to counter this threat, including a remote-control version of the B-17 bomber. From the V-1 ski sites to the mobile basing employed by the V-2 units and the other secret weapons bases like the 'V-3' high-pressure gun at Mimoyeques, this book examines the impact of these weapon systems and defences not only on the war but on modern weaponry. With many of the sites described still surviving today, this is a perfect companion for a tour of the V weapon sites built during World War II. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $18.95.
